How To Get Updates to the Infopreneur Blog

What is RSS?

RSS is a format for syndicating content from websites and personal weblogs. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated (displayed on other websites, or viewed elsewhere) via RSS.

Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and display them to you in an appropriate way.

RSS-aware programs called feed readers help you keep up with all your favorite sites by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

What's that orange button for?

It's an indicator that the content (webpage, blog or other) you are viewing has an RSS feed. You can choose to receive updates automatically by adding the RSS feed to your feed reader.

When you click on the button using a regular web browser, you'll see HTML code - unreadable goobledegook!

But view the same 'code' in a feed reader (or 'RSS aggregator') and it will take the code, and interpret it for you. You'll see the messages I post on the RSS feeds blog - and best of all, you won't have to keep visiting the blog to read updates. You'll get them automatically delivered to your feed reader!

If you've subscribed to email newsletters, you'll understand the principle. Instead of signing up for a newsletter by filling in a form and submitting your email address, you simply look for a site's RSS feed (the orange button link) and click on it to 'sign up' for future updates!

Why RSS feeds?

Because it is an easier way for you to receive information you want, in a way that is 100% under your control.

I post a message. It is automatically delivered via RSS feeds to your feed reader. You read it.

If you don't like what I'm sending you, you simply remove my RSS feeds from your reader - and you won't be bothered by me again - EVER! You are in control.

How can I get your RSS feeds?

It's simple. Just 3 steps.

  • Get a 'feed reader'. There are many different ones available - see a list here. You can choose one you like.

I use FeedReader - click here to download it.

  • Click on the orange XML button. Ignore what you see in the browser window - it is code. Instead, focus on the address which appears in your browser's address bar, near the top of your screen. Highlight this, and copy it (click on "Edit > Copy"). If you want to add the "Infopreneur Blog" RSS feed, the address is

    http://www.infopreneurblog.com/?feed

  • Now open up your feed reader. The instructions to add a new feed may vary. If you downloaded FeedReader, click on the NEW FEED button. In the box, paste the link you copied above.

That's it. You're all done.

When I next update my RSS feed, you will automatically receive the content into your feed reader. You can either read it there, or click on the link to visit the website.

Note: There are now many different buttons - and many different ways - website owners are referencing RSS feeds. Yahoo! has it's own button, FeedBurner has some, and other words like "ATOM", "FEED", and "RSS" are sometimes used instead of XML.

You might see one or more of these buttons:

Subscribe in NewsGator Online

The principle is the same. Click on the button and copy-paste the link into your feed reader. In future versions of the popular web browsers, RSS feeds will be viewable automatically. Until then, this system should do.

Why not simply email instead of RSS feeds?

Here's why - click here. If you want to receive the same information by email, you can do that too. Just fill in the form below:

Can I syndicate your content on my website?

Sure. Here's the widget you'll see displayed on your website.

And below is the code you'll need to copy-and-paste into your own website, in order to syndicate my RSS feeds blog content on it.

If this won't fit the design or layout of your website or blog, you can customize the widget and even pick a different color scheme - just click here to customize the widget.

Ok, so have you set it up so you'll be informed about updates? Great.
